The XX and SM F'N D

Andrea posted some tunes by these up & comers in music. From across the pond, The XX mix together some hip hop flavour, reverb-heavy guitar, and delicate vocals. Their keyboardist left just recently but it seemed like the got by just fine at their free show at Zulu records.

Zulu was packed for the event. It was standing room only and I managed to snag a spot right at the top of the stairs. What caught my interest first was their percussionist. He was running three Akai MPC 500s with various samples and drum hits. Jamie Smith has got some awesome skill on the machine and I think he'd be a hit if he did production outside of his band. Romy's voice sounds so shy but at the same time powerful. Her and Oliver's vocals create something completely different and fresh. Just what music needs right now...

Simian Mobile Disco returns to Vancouver next week on December 2nd. These guys mean business. If you don't know who they are, they're also from England and are who I consider pioneers of electronic music (alongside Daft Punk) for my generation just as say Kraftwerk was for the older folk. I ain't poking fun. Their shows are like nothing you will ever see. Their shows are like nothing you'll ever hear.

This is what you can expect to see and hear. But it's best experienced live

I won't be going to this one since I've got a final the next day, first thing in the morning and it's imperative that I pass it. Does anyone need a ticket? Drop me a line.

Crunch time!

It's the final push til the end of the semester which is a big sigh of relief for most of us. I didn't get to posting last week because of a really busy week and following weekend (wicked fun, would do again). Here's a mix to make up for it. I don't know where I found time to do this but it totally kept me from studying. Stoked.

Don Rimini

Photo cred: Scenesta (clubzone)

Remember how I was going on about YoungBlood Halloween and how it would be bonkers? Well, it was. Two rooms, two sounds, one stupid pounding night. Every one that played absolutely killed. I tried to divide my time between the two rooms but spent most of it in the main room (expendable youth, jokers of the scene, felix cartal). The second room hosted acid girls and Don Rimini. No serato needed here. Don played a wicked set just with CDJs. He's got some crazy technique too (or maybe I'm just not aware of them since I don't use CDJs). He kept it pounding until well past 2. I also heard him throw in some Wolfgang Gartner at the end of the night which I instantly got back up for. Take a listen at these songs and you might recognize one. If you don't, rock out anyways.

Terry Poison- Synthetic Harmonizer (Don Rimini remix) (killlller)
Don Rimini - Nervous Breakdown (F'N killer)
Crookers - Let Me Back Up (Don Rimini remix) (F'NNN KILLLLER)

ps: Wolfgang Gartner is back in Vancouver on December 17th @ the Modern. If you missed him the last time (like me) you CANNOT miss him again
