Last week:

Last week was a real treat. The XX put on a fantastic and FREE set at Zulu on Thursday. Here's a video of their song Crystalized. Whoever took this video is super lucky to have snagged this spot. There's one more of their song Shelter.

Crystalized

B-b-b-b-breakbot!

Does anyone know what controller that is?

Saturday was party time at Shine. Bonafide Saturdays brought Breakbot in from France. Signed to Ed Banger, Tibor (his real name...I know eh?) he's been praised by the likes of Alex Metric and Alan Braxe and has done made numerous remixes of artists such as Justice, Sneaky Sound System, Sebastien Tellier and Pnau. Not only did he funk things up, the rocked the place hard Nobody wasn't having a good time. I know I was and James especially...

Hot Pink Delorean is playing at Shine tonight for FML Thursdays. Tix are cheap and there should be some at the door if you want to go down.

Sneaky Sound System - When We Were Young (Breakbot remix)

Justice - Let There Be Light (Breakbot remix [WAY better than the original])

The XX and SM F'N D

Andrea posted some tunes by these up & comers in music. From across the pond, The XX mix together some hip hop flavour, reverb-heavy guitar, and delicate vocals. Their keyboardist left just recently but it seemed like the got by just fine at their free show at Zulu records.

Zulu was packed for the event. It was standing room only and I managed to snag a spot right at the top of the stairs. What caught my interest first was their percussionist. He was running three Akai MPC 500s with various samples and drum hits. Jamie Smith has got some awesome skill on the machine and I think he'd be a hit if he did production outside of his band. Romy's voice sounds so shy but at the same time powerful. Her and Oliver's vocals create something completely different and fresh. Just what music needs right now...

The XX - Islands
The XX - Basic Space.
The XX - Stars

Simian Mobile Disco returns to Vancouver next week on December 2nd. These guys mean business. If you don't know who they are, they're also from England and are who I consider pioneers of electronic music (alongside Daft Punk) for my generation just as say Kraftwerk was for the older folk. I ain't poking fun. Their shows are like nothing you will ever see. Their shows are like nothing you'll ever hear.

This is what you can expect to see and hear. But it's best experienced live

I won't be going to this one since I've got a final the next day, first thing in the morning and it's imperative that I pass it. Does anyone need a ticket? Drop me a line.

Crunch time!

It's the final push til the end of the semester which is a big sigh of relief for most of us. I didn't get to posting last week because of a really busy week and following weekend (wicked fun, would do again). Here's a mix to make up for it. I don't know where I found time to do this but it totally kept me from studying. Stoked.

Don Rimini

Photo cred: Scenesta (clubzone)

Remember how I was going on about YoungBlood Halloween and how it would be bonkers? Well, it was. Two rooms, two sounds, one stupid pounding night. Every one that played absolutely killed. I tried to divide my time between the two rooms but spent most of it in the main room (expendable youth, jokers of the scene, felix cartal). The second room hosted acid girls and Don Rimini. No serato needed here. Don played a wicked set just with CDJs. He's got some crazy technique too (or maybe I'm just not aware of them since I don't use CDJs). He kept it pounding until well past 2. I also heard him throw in some Wolfgang Gartner at the end of the night which I instantly got back up for. Take a listen at these songs and you might recognize one. If you don't, rock out anyways.

Terry Poison- Synthetic Harmonizer (Don Rimini remix) (killlller)
Don Rimini - Nervous Breakdown (F'N killer)
Crookers - Let Me Back Up (Don Rimini remix) (F'NNN KILLLLER)

ps: Wolfgang Gartner is back in Vancouver on December 17th @ the Modern. If you missed him the last time (like me) you CANNOT miss him again

The Twelves would've been massive in the 70s

Well, they've done it again. The Twelves have a new remix out of "Seven" by Fever Ray (Karin Andersson of The Knife) and its just fantastic. I really wish I had gone and seen the Twelves at Shine when they were in town.

Have a listen here

And now for something completely different:

I came across Spoon pretty recently and liked what I heard. If any of you have seen 500 Days of Summer, their song "The Infinite Pet" is featured in there. They've also been on PBS' Austin City Limits which is big for any band. Bands such as Explosions in the Sky, My Morning Jacket, and The Decemberists have been on the show separate of the Austin City Limits music festival (I think). A new LP is on its way soon so stay tuned for that if you dig it

Here's a single from Spoon from their 2001 release "Girls Can Tell"

Spoon - Everything Hits At Once

From across the pond in the UK, Pete and the Pirates have been on pretty frequent rotation in my room for the last little while. I would never have known about them if my sister hadn't told me to download their album (tanks sis!)

It's catchy, fun, and a damn good listen

Bright Lights
Knots
Both songs from their 2008 relase "Little Death"

It's Halloween tomorrow which means PARTY HARD & HAVE FUN!! If anyone in Vancouver is going to Youngblood Halloween, I'll see you party folk there! The night is going to be

BONKERS

Let's Funk Friday

It's mo'fuckin friday which means getting as much of my paper done so I can make way for study time this weekend for two midterms next week. Fun fun!

Out of LA, Keenhouse have cast a "lets funk" kind of tone to studying lately. They were in Vancouver recently at Bonafide Saturday at Shine. I didn't get a chance to check it out but I'm positive that good times were had. If you're in Vancouver, check out Shine. Although it's noticeably small, the sound system kicks ass and Thursdays/Saturdays are your night for electro, disco, and house. Its free before 11, too. Good news if you're an early bird like me.

Keenhouse- Ari-es (Hemingway's Starlight Yacht Remix)
NightWaves- Fascination (Keenhouse Remix)

Bonus: Junior Boys - Hazel (HIGHLY recommended)

Where The Wild Things Are

No, I haven't seen it yet. Karen O did the soundtrack for the movie which I'm stoked on. I've read some different reviews of the movie saying that it "isn't so much a movie for children as it is a movie about children." I guess it's a movie that a kid would figure out until he/she would be old enough to grasp everything. Kinda like me and Forrest Gump. Nothing made sense and now I realize that Jenny was going to fly far far away from her balcony to the concrete.

Karen O and the Kids - All is Love

Aside from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen's side project Native Korean Rock is a bare-bones, unfinished sound that seem as if they were some audible note to self; none of the songs break 2:00 and the songs are great because of this.

Native Korean Rock - OOO

First Post!

Well howdy do da fucking dandy y'all!
It's my first post here and well, I must say, I am pretty stoked for this and whats to come.
We'll say I have quite the eclectic music taste, so every post is going to be one big old bag of SURPRISE!
Phil already made an introduction post, yet failed to spell my last name correctly, but hey! NO worries Phil.

So The xx is giving us their version of Florence and the Machine's 'you got the love'. As if the original wasn't already a super catchy hit, xx may of just made it a little bit better. I'll let you, the listeners decide on that though.
So here it is have a listen:

p.s. Both The xx and Florence are currently touring Europe right now so hit em up on myspace check out the dates and go to a show or two...or even three! They also have two US dates (NY & LA) and a Can. date (TORONTO) this month I believe.

Four for the floor

Bring on the long weekend! There are a lot of long weekend parties going on in Vancouver so go grab a friend and have some fun!

The Twelves are a wicked Brazilian duo that have done a lot of remixes from the likes of Groove Armada, Radiohead, and Metric. Their remix of "Help I'm Alive" is a big hit for me and is a perfect "get your booty movin'" tune.

Metric - Help I'm Alive (The Twelves remix)(zshare)

Sometimes there are songs that you would never expect to hear in a party/club environment; songs like The Knife's Silent Shout or Cut Copy's Hearts On Fire (at least I think so) Here's one that'll pop your top

Bat For Lashes

Daniel (DJ Kue remix)(zshare)

Acid Girls have put out some pretty killer remixes too. I remember finding them randomly about a year ago. I really dug their stuff and I knew that these guys would drop and drop big. They'll be playing YoungBlood Halloween this year with Jokers Of The Scene, Felix Cartal...eh, just look at the poster. It's gonna be MAD!

(Insert your Cyrillic translation here) - The Toxic Avenger (Acid Girls remix)(zshare)
Seriously, don't freak out if the song title appears in some weird language, that's just how it is. Can anyone translate it? Leave a comment!

Once again, its the Thanksgiving long weekend so have a good one whatever you're doing to celebrate. Much love to everyone doing the Push For The Cure this year. Once again I won't be pushing the whole way, but I'll catch up with you all on the Hastings stretch. Next year!

WELCOME ABOARD

ANDREA FREAKIN' ALDRIDGE! She's now on board as a co-author of this blog so there's going to be a bit more activity on this blog (as in more updates than once a week). I should pick up my game then...

Anyway, she's rad and look forward to some awesome tunes from her! Thanks Andrea!

La Roux & Redial

La Roux's been causing quite a stir lately. With catchy melodies and wicked club play-potential (tons of remixes out there), she's one to keep an eye out on. A fella by the name of Redial did a killer remix of Bulletproof, adding a funkier bassline and spacey (but not overwhelmingly spacey) synths make for a fun disco-shaker. Fire up the strobe light!

Redial - Heart (zshare)

PS. SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO IN VANCOUVER DECEMBER 1st. DO NOT MISS THIS! @ The Commodore. Tix at Zulu, ticketmaster etc.

Sniff

Bumming around at the student lounge with a couple of beer in your system is a good way of relieving the day's frustration. I should be looking for articles on human origins and where homo habilis fits into the picture of evolution, but not doing that is way more fun.

It's pay day for many workin' folk and that means it's time to celebrate! I picked up a wicked compilation CD called "Omnidance" from Turbo Recordings. One of the more fun songs on this CD is done by a dude named Kolombo entitled "Sniff". Just listen for it.

Kolombo - Sniff (zshare)

PS: HOLY FUCK IS IN TOWN TODAY THURSDAY THE 24TH. Here's a cover of Royksopp's "Happy Up Here"

Off to Salt Spring Island for the weekend! Salt Spring Slope Style & Steez, aw yeah!

Wilderness of Canada...I mean Manitoba

I came across a band called The Wilderness of Manitoba while searching other music blogs (Thanks Burgeoning Metropolis!) I'm a big fan of acoustic folk and sounds of that nature. Their sound is a warm, humbling kind of sound and develops into a more mournful atmosphere. Need to self-examine? Look no further.

New blog, new sound!

Aaaaaand they're off. Fresh from my itunes library comes a man from England by the name of Will Hollad, better known as Quantic. Ranging from dub to jazz, he's got a unique sound. B-boys, holla!
